Many modern cars nowadays require a special type of key to start and although a transponder key might look like an ordinary piece of metal, it is not, in actuality it holds much more value, it has a tiny computer chip is included in such keys and plays a critical role during the process of unlocking a vehicle.
Transponder key consists of a special plastic head, which includes a miniaturized computer chip. The latter sends a specific code to the vehicle security system once a key is inserted. In case the code corresponds with the vehicle's requirements, the ignition system allows the car to work properly. Otherwise, the engine is unable to start even in case the key looks suitable for a particular lock.
Traditional keys work in quite a simple manner, they should be properly shaped and allow the ignition lock to work. Therefore, cutting a key is enough for getting a duplicate, however a transponder key consists of two elements, the key itself and its electronic component, it makes manufacturing a bit more complicated since it requires a locksmith to create not only a correct key but also program the chip.
Electronic chip embedded in the plastic head of transponder keys becomes one of the reasons behind higher expenses while replacing a key. To ensure proper interaction between a vehicle and the key, the former has to be properly programmed to work with the key. This means that a duplicate produced in some hardware store can open a door without any issues, but the engine would remain idle.
Modern cars offer their owners even more innovative ways of accessing vehicles and instead of a traditional key, a keyless start car system uses a wireless radio connection between the vehicle and the key fob. Once it is pressed, an engine starts. The principle of functioning remains the same, a proper signal allows using the key for starting the engine.
